How to Measure Your Gap

Measuring your gap requires three inputs: your annual spending budget, your guaranteed income sources, and your portfolio size. The calculation produces a critical metric — your portfolio withdrawal rate.

Step-by-step gap calculation

  1. 1. Estimate annual retirement spending — Use your current spending as a baseline. Many retirees spend 70–80% of pre-retirement income, but healthcare costs often rise. Include travel, healthcare, housing, food, and entertainment.
  2. 2. Total your guaranteed income — SS benefit + pension + annuity + rental income + any other fixed income. Get your SS estimate at ssa.gov/myaccount.

Withdrawal Rate: The Key Risk Metric

What the Income Gap Calculator computes: a deterministic depletion age. Given one fixed return rate and one inflation rate, it runs a single year-by-year simulation — withdrawing each year's gap before the return, then escalating next year's gap by inflation — and reports the exact year your portfolio would run out, or that the gap is covered for your whole horizon. It does not run Monte Carlo simulations and does not output a “probability of success.”
