Estimates and assumptions

Results are based on assumptions you enter (spending, returns, inflation, Social Security, etc.) and simplified rules (tax modeling, withdrawal ordering, and other approximations). Actual outcomes may differ significantly due to market performance, inflation, longevity, taxes, legislation, investment choices, healthcare costs, and other factors beyond the control of SmartRetireCalc.

Portfolio Lab: synthetic historical data

Portfolio Lab may use proxy securities to construct synthetic historical returns for periods before a selected security has sufficient actual history. Actual history always takes precedence. A proxy security may be one curated and reviewed by an administrator, or — where that option is enabled — one selected automatically at the time of the backtest after passing economic-compatibility and statistical-validation checks; if no suitable proxy qualifies, the requested period is shortened instead. Not every security receives a proxy. Synthetic history is an estimate based on another security or benchmark and does not represent actual trading history of the selected security. Results using synthetic history are identified in Portfolio Lab and should not be interpreted as actual historical performance. Proxy mappings that are used, including those selected automatically, are recorded and may be reviewed by an administrator.

Taxes and laws change

Tax laws, Social Security rules, and retirement account rules can change. This tool may not reflect the latest law changes in all cases.
