How Our Retirement Calculator Works

SmartRetireCalc runs a transparent, year-by-year retirement projection engine. Instead of giving you a rough rule-of-thumb, it simulates each year of your retirement in sequence — applying income, spending, taxes, Roth conversions, withdrawals, and investment returns — so you can see exactly how your portfolio evolves from today until your end age.

Every formula is documented in the Methodology page. Below is a plain-English walkthrough of the nine steps the engine follows for each year in the projection.

Step 1: Timeline and account setup

The simulation loops from your Current Age to your End Age (typically 90–95). Each year it tracks four separate account buckets — pre-tax (401k / traditional IRA), Roth, taxable brokerage, and savings/cash — because each bucket has different tax treatment on withdrawal.

Return assumptions switch at your Retirement Age: before retirement you typically hold a higher stock allocation; after retirement a more conservative blend is common to reduce sequence risk.

Step 2: Inflation-adjusted spending

You enter your annual spending in today's dollars. Each projected year, that spending is increased by the inflation rate you specify (default 3%). If inflation runs at 3% continuously, $60,000 today becomes roughly $80,600 in 10 years and $108,000 in 20 years. You can explore the effect of higher inflation rates using the Inflation Calculator.

Step 3: Social Security income

Enter your benefit in today's dollars — the SSA.gov estimate for your chosen claiming age (monthly × 12). Nothing is paid before that age; from then on the engine pays that benefit indexed for inflation from today, so it keeps its purchasing power, and grows it each later year at your inflation rate (proxying the real COLA). The temporary inflation-spike stress test raises spending but not Social Security. If you have a spouse, the engine includes their benefit on the same basis — critical for accurate tax modeling since combined income determines how much of your Social Security is taxable (up to 85% at higher income levels).

Step 4: Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

Starting at age 73 (per SECURE 2.0), if you have pre-tax accounts, the engine applies the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table to calculate the minimum amount you must withdraw each year. RMDs increase taxable income and can push you into higher tax brackets or trigger IRMAA Medicare surcharges — reasons why Roth conversions before 73 can significantly reduce lifetime taxes. Step 5: Roth conversion strategy

The engine supports three Roth conversion strategies during your retirement years:

Step 6: Spending withdrawals

To fund living expenses after Social Security, the engine withdraws in a tax-efficient order:

  1. Savings / cash — no tax on withdrawal.
  2. Taxable brokerage — generally lower tax rate (capital gains).
  3. Pre-tax (401k / IRA) — ordinary income tax applies.
  4. Roth — tax-free and penalty-free in retirement; used last to preserve growth.

Step 7: Federal income tax estimation

Taxes are estimated using progressive federal income tax brackets with the standard deduction. Taxable income in any given year includes pre-tax withdrawals, Roth conversion amounts, and the taxable portion of Social Security (0%–85% depending on provisional income). Roth withdrawals and after-tax brokerage principal are not taxable. State taxes are not included.

The engine also applies IRMAA Medicare surcharges for high-income years, which are deducted from the portfolio. This makes it essential to model Roth conversions carefully so you don't inadvertently cross IRMAA thresholds. Read the Medicare Guide for the threshold details.

Step 8: Portfolio contributions (pre-retirement)

Before you reach retirement age, the engine adds annual contributions from you and your spouse (401k, IRA, employer match, taxable) to the relevant buckets. Contributions are inflation-adjusted so they maintain real purchasing power in the projection. After retirement, contributions stop and the portfolio sustains itself through investment returns and withdrawals.

Step 9: Investment growth

At the end of each year the remaining balance in each account grows by a blended return based on your stock/bond allocation. For example, 70% stocks at 7% and 30% bonds at 3% gives a blended return of 5.8%. Returns can differ between pre-retirement and post-retirement periods. Scenario testing

Every calculation automatically produces three parallel projections — Average, Below Average (returns reduced 1%), and Significantly Below Average (returns reduced 2%) — so you always see a range, not just a single optimistic number. What to do with the results

The Charts tab opens with a projection chart of your total end-of-year portfolio balance at every age (with markers for retirement, Social Security, and your first RMD year), followed by charts that break down income versus spending, account balances by type, Roth conversions, required minimum distributions, and federal taxes over time. The calculator also reports, for each year, whether your planned spending and loan payments were fully funded — and separately whether the year’s tax and Medicare IRMAA could be paid — so a “funding gap” is called out explicitly with the age it first appears. A portfolio balance reaching zero is not the same as a funding gap: if Social Security, a pension, or an annuity still covers your planned spending, the plan can be fully funded even with no investments left.
